If you could only go to 1 music festival every year, what would it be?

So the question is this: If you could only go to 1 music festival each year regardless of cost, location, or other prohibitors, what would it be?

Sure we’ve got some great festivals here locally and in the Pacific Northwest (see: Bumbershoot, Capitol Hill Block Party, Doe Bay Festival, MFNW, KEXP BBQ, etc…), but there are also some other great line-ups around the country (and the world) that would make even us local festival veterans jealous.

Not technically a “Summer” event, the big boy on the block here in the states at least is SXSW. This is what kinda kicks everything else off. Personally, I think the festival has lost a lot of the appeal it once had, but I guess that’s the price you pay for success. For the type of music we listen to, this is ground zero and if you’re an up and coming band , this is a festival you need to be playing. What about great festivals like Bonnaroo in Manchester Tennessee? For me, that’s how a multi-day festival should be ran, as our friends over at Seattle Rock Guy can probably attest with their recent experience you can read (HERE). There’s also Pitchfork Fest, Coachella, Lollaplooza, Austin City Limits, CMJ (one of my favorites!), and that’s just counting some of the bigger stateside festivals. Europe is whole other world, their festivals are ridiculous both both in size and scope. Here’s just a few of the bigger 2010 music festival line-ups from across the pond:

Snoop Dogg, Willie Nelson, Stevie Wonder, Orbital, Flaming Lips, and 45 stages of other great bands (including a John Peel stage!) (line-up HERE)

Arcade Fire, The Libertines, Guns n Roses, Blink 182, Weezer, Cypress Hill, and a ton of others… (line-up HERE)

Placebo, Iron Maiden, Queens of the Stone Age, Snow Patrol, The Prodigy – this is a great festival in Belgium that always surprises me with their amazing line-ups. (line-up HERE)

(FWIW – Mine would probably be Glastonbury)

  1. I would have to say Bumbershoot. Compared to all the other festivals I know of (or have heard of), Bumbershoot has the best variety in regards to genre. It also has a lot of my favorite bands. I do like the idea of Glastonbury too. Fourty-five stages of music is just insane, but I didn’t see too many bands I could identify with. That’d be a great place to go if I was looking for something new to try and just go for the plain experience of it.

  2. Austin City Limits. Hands down.
